The Ohio State University is situated in the heart of Columbus, which is the heart (capital) of Ohio, which is the "heart" of the Midwest (thanks to an African American preacher whose paramusical skills suggested these literary and literal connections). With at least four major regional campuses, OSU boasts a population of over 50,000 students and is leader in major research (i.e., academic, medical-professional, technological initiatives (Battelle, OCLC, James Cancer Research Center, etc.), as well as in extramural activities (cf. Michigan)-- games and sports.

Columbus is renowned as a "testing center" for patents and new products, and houses the headquarters of insurance firms and utilities companies, for example. The city hosts its well-known Ohio State Fair every summer, the International Festival, in addition to local and suburban community festivals. With a population of around a million, the city's festivals reflect also the changing demographic patterns of the metropolitan area: Asian festival, Juneteenth, Latino, African, Korean, Irish, Oktoberfest, Clinton Performing Arts Festival/, African, Indian, Italian, etc. Our neighborhoods are also venues of international electronic music and women's music festivals. The area on High Street and which leads to downtown from OSU is known as the Short North, sort of New York City's Greenwich Village; arts galleries host what is known as "gallery hop" every first Saturday of the month. Apart from Minnesota, Columbus hosts one of the largest Somali immigrant populations, and there about 21,000 Indians in Columbus who actively support Hindustani and Carnatic musical traditions. Here is a glance at this summer's festival listing, for example.

Columbus a major arts venue [http://www.columbusarts.com/; http://www.columbusart.com/artscene/menupage.html] and the well-known Wexner Center/ (OSU campus) support both local and international musical events and individual artists, who often visit more than once [these include Wynton Marsalis, U2, Cirque de Soleil, home-grown Bow Wow, Los Muequitos de Matanza, Yossou N'dour, and recently the OSU annual contemporary music festival devoted to African American composers. Columbus is also venue for the annual international Barbershop Singing Convention.

Many of the local communities such as Dublin, Worthington, Clintonvillle, Westerville, German Village, Italian Village, etc. regularly host Sunday, monthly and/or weekly mini concerts. There are many sightful, insightful, and soundful recreation places in Columbus:

Whetstone Park of Roses; Franklin Conservatory Park; Innis Gardens, etc.
