The Department of Art, Music and Philosophy at John Jay College seeks an ethnomusicologist or musicologist for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of assistant or associate professor beginning Fall 2006. A Ph.D. in either preferred. Teaching duties will include a survey of American music (with emphasis on popular music), and possibly a world music survey (with emphasis on music cultures represented in New York City), an elementary theory course, and/or a general introduction to music. 4-3 course load, semester system. We seek a candidate with a strong commitment to public higher education and teaching at the undergraduate level. Evidence of scholarly promise and demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching are required.

John Jay College of Criminal Justice, located in mid-town Manhattan, New York City, is a member of the City University of New York system. It offers degrees at levels ranging from the associate’s through the bachelor's and master's degrees to the Ph.D., with most students majoring in the social sciences and subjects related to criminal justice. The department’s music program offers introductory-level courses to undergraduate non-majors.

The Department of Music of the University of Pittsburgh seeks to make two appointments beginning September 1, 2006, pending budgetary approval.

Rank: Assistant Professor; full-time tenure stream.

Duties: Teach courses to undergraduate and graduate students, and direct theses and dissertations; conduct research and participate in scholarly communication; share in departmental responsibilities.

Qualifications: Ph.D. in music; potential for distinguished scholarship in music research in the history of western music, ethnomusicology, intercultural music, and/or music theory; record of excellent teaching; interest in working with colleagues in the department and in related disciplines.

We seek two scholars with approaches that extend and complement those of the current faculty. Research strengths may include 19th- and 20th-century music, Latin American music, South Asian music, American music, popular music, opera, music theory in relation to these topics, media studies, cultural studies, gender studies, sexuality studies, or other distinctive areas at the forefront of music research.

The Department of Music offers the Bachelor of Arts degree in a liberal-arts curriculum and Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees with concentrations in composition and theory, ethnomusicology, and historical musicology; faculty specialties also include jazz and intercultural music. The graduate program, in addition to specialized instruction in the histories, methodologies, theoretical frameworks and analytical techniques of each discipline, provides an opportunity for interaction among them through a series of core courses and electives.

Faculty Vacancy In Persian Music

The Claire Trevor School of the Arts at the University of California, Irvine, seeks to appoint an outstanding ethnomusicologist as its first Maseeh Professor in Persian Performing Arts. Candidates for this endowed professorship should have credentials in scholarship and/or performance appropriate for appointment with tenure at the rank of either Professor or Associate Professor.

Applicants should have a distinguished record in both research and teaching related to Persian music and should be able to contribute to the foundation of academic courses across the broader field of ethnomusicology. The work of the successful candidate will be supported by a substantial annual research and teaching allocation. In addition to holding a faculty position within the Department of Music, the Maseeh Professor will serve as one of three core faculty members in the newly established Samuel M. Jordan Center for Persian Studies and Culture, an interdisciplinary center based in the School of the Humanities, teaming in this capacity with both the Maseeh Chair in Persian Studies and Culture (who serves also as the Center's Director) and the Baskerville Professor of Persian Studies and Culture.

The Department of Music at the University of Alberta invites applications for a tenure track appointment at the rank of assistant professor in ethnomusicology. Assistant/Associate/Full Professor in Culture, Performance, and Globalization

Position Description
The Department of World Arts and Cultures at UCLA invites applications from scholars and/or artists for two open-rank positions focused on culture, performance, and globalization. The applicants’ artistic or scholarly research might focus on the migration of aesthetic practices; borders and border crossing; citizenship and immigration; new approaches to ethnographic inquiry and research methods; or new approaches to choreography/performance, with the intention of extending, illuminating, or critiquing theories and practices of globalization.

Responsibilities of the positions include active pursuit of a program of research, publication, and/or creative work; graduate and undergraduate teaching and advising; and service to the home unit. Successful candidates will be expected to contribute energetically to the interdisciplinary and intercultural theoretical dialogues that define the intellectual vitality of the Department of World Arts and Cultures. One candidate may also be invited to accept a split appointment with UCLA’s International Institute.

Qualifications
Ph.D., M.F.A., or other terminal degree preferred. We especially invite applications from candidates who are interested in connecting with fields and disciplines outside their own, and who are strongly committed to scholarly or artistic research.
